Michigan High School Figure Skating:


High School Figure Skaters in Michigan compete in 5 Districts, each composed of 6-12 teams. Each school may field a High level team, and a Low level team, which compete separately. Skaters participate in 4 initial-round competitions within their own District, then the victors from each district meet in a final State Championship Competition in March..

Three of the initial-round competitions in each district are Team Compulsory competitions. At these competitions, there are 3 events at each level - a jumps event, a spins event, and a moves event. One of the initial-round competitions is an Individual competition. At these, selected team members perform skating programs which are judged individually. The Invitational Competition (the "Optional" competition) is open to teams from any District.

Skating Skills Requirements:


The minimum skating knowledge requirement for this team...

backward crossovers, spirals, footwork, one foot spin and ½ jumps.


Team Requirements:

  • South Lyon or South Lyon East student

  • Adhere to South Lyon Athletic Code of Conduct

  • Must have a good pair of figure skates

  • You must be enrolled in a basic skills program or taking lessons with a private instructor.

  • You must skate a minimum of once a week either in group lesson and or private lessons.

  • You will need to be a United States Figure Skating member (USFS).

  • or an Ice Skating Institute member (ISI).

Cost:

    The cost associated to be on the Figure Skating team is estimated to be $350.00 which covers competition, coaching, and ice time fees only. This number is based on 2007/2008 year of 6 skaters. This fee may be less or more depending on the number of skaters participating and fundraising opportunities. Additional cost will be the individual competition, invitational competition, skating membership, and the required skating attire.

Practices:

Team practices will be every Saturday morning at the Plymouth Cultural Center or Compuware Sports Arena. starting November 1st 2008 – February/March 2009.
